This course introduces students to case management of sick children using the international guidelines for Integrated Management of Childhood Illness, the aim of which is to reduce child mortality and frequency and severity of illness and disability. The case management guidelines will introduce students to assessment, classification, treatment, referral and follow up for sick children in two main age categories. The categories are infants from birth to under 2 months of age and children from 2 months to under 5 years of age. In both these age groups, there is a strong focus on the health professional providing counselling to the mother to support her ongoing care. Case scenarios will be used to ensure students develop knowledge and skills for application to practice.
