This course introduces students to the requirements for becoming a midwife, including professional concepts, roles and responsibilities that should be expected. The course also provides key concepts of the midwifery profession, personal and professional attitudes and identities, mindsets and self-awareness, and personal regulations in practice. Students will practice caring, compassionate, and responsible work. Students will develop fundamental concepts of the profession, management styles, and standards of midwifery practice, models of care, and midwifery philosophy, including the concept of woman-centeredness and respectful care and basic human rights when receiving midwifery services. Students will develop critical thinking, critical thinking, and reasoning skills through clinical decision-making processes, as well as interpersonal communication skills with women/clients, families, other health care teams, and the community in a respectful, supportive, and collaborative manner.
This course will help students gain basic knowledge about food, nutrition, and metabolism, as well as nutritional needs throughout the female life cycle, especially for pregnant women, newborns, and children. Based on scientific knowledge of basic nutrition, this course will provide knowledge of methods for preventing, treating, and managing malnutrition and general nutrition in Cambodia. This course also emphasizes factors that influence dietary habits, and students will learn nutritional strategies to promote health. Students will develop skills in communicating with women, families, and caregivers to promote better health and nutritional safety.
This course contributes to the overall curriculum, preparing midwifery students for their first practice. Students focus on learning clinical skills related to practice, including: observation, physical examination, laboratory tests, and psychological assessment. Students are prepared for practical clinical skills in a health care setting to understand basic hygiene requirements, patient handling, universal precautions, infection control, reporting responsibilities, and occupational health and safety requirements consistent with the duties of the profession. The course also provides basic life-saving skills such as shock management, blood pressure reduction (and adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) including: consultation between specialists and/or timely referral, taking into account local circumstances.
This course provides students with knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of organ systems as well as basic biochemical processes in the human body, which form the foundation for understanding the science of obstetrics in the management of women with reproductive health problems. Students will be introduced to knowledge of microbiology, disease-related factors, and immune system processes for the prevention and control of microbial and parasitic infections in obstetrics.
