In this course, students will develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required to manage life-threatening conditions in women and newborns, building upon courses 5 through 7 (Midwifery care for complications occurring during pregnancy, labor, delivery, and the postpartum period). The study in this course will provide students with practical opportunities to achieve competency in Basic and Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (BEmONC and CEmONC), in accordance with national clinical management protocols for safe practices. Initially using a simulation/training environment, students will work to demonstrate capability in obstetric and newborn emergency situations with a strong focus on teamwork and communication. Students will collaborate effectively to manage emergency scenarios through team-based drills. The course content includes the clinical management of obstetric emergencies, the utilization of emergency medications, and psychosocial support through providing crucial information to women and their families regarding the outcomes or status of the woman/newborn who may be at risk.
This course is designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to manage complications during the postpartum period and to manage ill newborns/infants. Students will learn about the impacts of common postpartum complications and practice the stages of problem identification and life-saving resuscitation, including clinical management through various case studies. Supporting women with complications in the postpartum period includes providing information and collaborating with local authorities and village health volunteers within the community. It also involves addressing the special needs of women living with HIV or other infectious diseases, whether they have a single newborn or multiple newborns (twins or triplets). Additionally, this course aims to develop clinical competency skills to identify and manage health problems in newborns. It provides foundational knowledge on newborns with complications and special needs, including the management of low-birth-weight or premature infants. Students will also learn how to support families with a sick newborn, incorporating effective communication and health education skills.
This course provides the essential knowledge, skills, and attitudes required to manage Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (BEmONC) during labor and delivery. It covers the anatomy and physiology of uterine contractions, the progression and identification of complications during childbirth, as well as diagnostic measures and life-saving interventions through clinical case studies and discussions. This course also offers training on the knowledge and foundations of BEmONC, such as managing retained placenta or membranes, and clinical protocols along with the utilization of emergency equipment and skilled care. The course covers key measures included in the national BEmONC emergency treatment program for application in hospitals and health centers, including postpartum transitions, preventive interventions for pain management during delivery, and assisted interventions to support health center personnel in delivering safe and effective obstetric care. Special care and support for women facing high-risk conditions during labor and childbirth are also integrated into this course to ensure timely diagnosis and treatment.
This course is designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to manage medical and obstetric issues, including complications during pregnancy. This forms the foundational framework required for subsequent learning in Concept 5, which focuses on emergency emergency obstetric care skills for midwives to demonstrate clinical proficiency in managing complications. The course highlights the impact of a woman's pre-existing medical conditions on herself, the fetus, and fetal development, as well as the physiology of complications during pregnancy. Students will develop assessment skills to detect obstetric health issues and abnormal conditions in the woman, the fetus, and fetal growth. In addition to studying the management of these complications, students will practice preventive interventions integrated with a respectful attitude to prevent complications during pregnancy, stop further progression of complications, and save lives through practical application using various case studies.
